This 9-week, evening course invites participants to explore Hand building techniques and Kurinuki: a method of hand building with clay. Kurinuki is a traditional, Japanese technique used to make pottery and translates as ‘to hollow’. This method involves the act of carving away from a single block of clay in the search for a unique form.
Participants can expect to be taught the foundations of clay, clay bodies and clay preparation following which you will be introduced to Kurinuki.
In addition to this, participants are invited to explore a number of different hand building techniques used to make pottery: pinch pottery, coil building and slab building.
The course is designed to allow participants to develop their own projects and an introduction to these techniques will enable participants to experiment with shaping, building and adapting different forms.
Throughout the duration of the 9-week course participants will learn a new sculptural method, while building their own small collection of Kurinuki pots.
Specific techniques include adding detail and texture and exploring colour through under glazing. Following this, participants will learn how to prepare pots for bisque firing, using the kiln located in our purpose-built ceramics workshop – turning their clay into ceramic ware.
