This course is suitable for students who have completed the Foundation Fashion course, or students who are confident in garment construction and want to learn more complex constructions, pattern adaption and develop their design skills.
This year the course will be based on "Fashion and the Environment". You will design and make a garment reflecting the environment in which they will be used, or from which they are inspired. Or your garment can reflect the impact of the fashion industry on the environment.
Understanding fibres and fabrics and manufacturing will inform the development of your final piece. You can adapt a commercial pattern or develop your own from a block.
Due to the time consuming nature of garment construction, you will be required to continue working on their projects out of class to complete this course.
You are encouraged to keep a visual diary, which reflects your observations, thoughts, inspiration, individual interests, work of other designer/artists and fabric research.
The University regularly reviews its courses. Course content and structure may change over time. See our course and module disclaimer for more information.
You must provide your own drafting/drawing and cutting equipment.
You will be supported to understand the design process through class talks, individual/group discussions and studio-based practice.
You are taught by specialist staff who will offer practical advice and instruction together with personal encouragement in discovering individual creative skills. You will receive general instruction and one-to-one tuition tailored to suit your personal level of experience and ability.
A complete health and safety induction will take place on commencement of the course.
Students are encouraged to inform us at the time of enrolment of information relating to a disability, medical condition or specific learning difficulty.
The Disability & Dyslexia Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia and other specific learning differences. Applicants with profound physical or sensory disabilities are encouraged to arrange a pre-entry visit to discuss any concerns and to view the facilities.
All students are required to be at least 16 years of age on the commencement of course excluding the Young Artist programmes.
This course is recommended if you have completed the Foundation Fashion course, or who have some previous experience in garment construction.
