Short course - Foundation
Fashion (Foundation)

The main aims of this course are to explore basic sewing and pattern cutting techniques.

You will develop understanding of the design process in both 2 and 3 dimensional form.

40hrs (16 weeks)
Wednesdays 7:00pm - 9:30pm
Saturdays 10:00am - 12:30pm

During the two terms, you will produce a body of work consisting of sewing samples and construct a basic pattern block. You will also gain experience of working with industrial equipment when constructing your final fashion outcome.

You are encouraged to keep a visual diary, which reflects your personal practice, inspiration, individual interests, work of other designer/artists and fabric research.

Learning Methods

You will be supported to understand the design process through class talks, individual/group discussions and studio-based practice.

Students are taught by specialist staff who will offer practical advice and instruction together with personal encouragement in discovering individual creative skills.

Students will receive general instruction and one-to-one tuition tailored to suit their personal level of experience and ability.

A complete health and safety induction will take place on commencement of the course.


This course is not formally assessed.


Academic Support

Students are encouraged to inform us at the time of enrolment of information relating to a disability, medical condition or specific learning difficulty.

The Inclusion Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia and other specific learning differences. Applicants with profound physical or sensory disabilities are encouraged to arrange a pre-entry visit to discuss any concerns and to view the facilities.

Study Skills Support

The Study Support Team provides training and support to all students in academic writing, study skills, maths and statistics, English language and information technology.


This course is recommended for beginners with limited to no garment construction experience.

Required Age

All students are required to be at least 16 years of age on the commencement of course excluding the Young Artist programmes.

Materials & Equipment

You must provide your own drafting/drawing and cutting equipment. 

You will have access to: Fashion production workshop, industrial sewing machines and overlockers, cutting tables, industrial steam irons and vacuum boards are provided.

You will be provided with: 1.5 metres calico, pattern cutting paper, pattern notcher, sewing machine needles and bobbins case are provided.

A refund is only applicable where there has been illness with a medical certificate to support it.

Gray's Art Shop

Located within the Gray’s building, the Art Shop stocks a wide range of specialist materials, papers and equipment for all kinds of creative ventures. Open to all, both student and non-student, with very competitive prices, the staff are on hand and happy to help. Open between 9am-3.30pm Monday to Friday and a selection of dates over each term to accommodate the Short Course students.

Staff appreciate many Short Course students are busy through the day, so they are happy to take phone orders that can be collected from reception at a later/more convenient time for students.


For new intakes course fees are reviewed and published annually for each mode of delivery. Tuition fees are fixed for the duration of a course at the rate confirmed in the offer letter.  For further information see:
