Contract Performance Management
The Module appraises the needs and requirements of contract performance management in an operations and project environment. It demonstrates the application and effectiveness of tools and techniques in controlling commercial contracts.
Contract performance can be enhanced, while the project is taking place, with measurement tools and practices. But what are these tools and how are they applied? The module explore several performance issues and tools and analyse how effective they can be in their application. Knowledge about contract performance can be enhanced through an evaluation of the tools and their success.
Your studies will include: service level agreements, key performance indicators, negotiation, tools and techniques for managing performance, and project control, project monitoring, control and reporting, work supervision, work content resource management, change control, post project evaluation and knowledge creation. Industry based, real world case studies and scenarios.
Through engagement and participation with this course you will be able to demonstrate your ability to:
- Appraise importance of the contract performance management and the role of negotiation in establishing performance measures.
- Establish key performance measures and their corresponding criteria in relation to the project business environment and deliverables.
- Critically appraise key contract and project monitoring and control techniques and their importance in achieving a successful outcome.
- Assess the different tools and techniques used in managing and supervising contractor performance.

Learning Methods
You will study within a global group of professionals employed within the various construction industries. There are weekly opportunities to enter into online discussion forums to discuss topics and exchange views and experiences, thereby providing a broader worldly interpretation and application of the knowledge provided. A series of study guides will lead you. All learning material, activities, and reading resources are available online via the module.
You will learn via our online virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle which provides you with lectures and course materials and allows you to study from any location.
As well as your Tutor, you will also have your own dedicated e-advisor who will assist you in accessing and engaging with the online material.
Independent Study
All learning material is provided and students will be expected to work through this material independently before participating in discussion with fellow students, completing activities and undertaking assessments.
Staff Delivering on this course
The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment is one of the three oldest of its kind in the UK, with a heritage that extends back to the 19th Century.
Whilst we are proud of our history, we have continually evolved our offering to the needs of our professional areas today, combining innovative thinking with new technologies and contemporary practice across all aspects of the design and construction of building, public space and cities. Tutors involved with this short course have teaching and research interests in: project management, project management competencies in superior and average performers, organisations, performance, and competence (particularly the transactional / transformational debate), adoption of innovative practice in the delivery of online courses.
Dr Bjeirmi research interests are: role of project management in knowledge creation and learning, client operational style and its effect on the contractor’s ability to innovate, leaders and learning within organisations, and project management competencies for the energy sector.
Assessment
The module will be assessed by participation within online discussion forums, online group work, and one main piece of individual written coursework.
