Join us for an inspirational 4 day course in location painting and meet like-minded creative students.

An experience lecturer will be on hand to help develop your paint application skills, tonal appreciation, compositional arrangement, and colour mixing techniques.

Initial sketches will be translated and developed into larger paintings tailored to each students personal level and aspirations.

This course offers the opportunity to experience working in oils, watercolour, gouache or acrylic, directly from the landscape in the famous tradition of en plein air.

Locations will include the RGU campus, Stonehaven and Bennachie Visitor Centre.

Tuition on water and oil based mediums will be included as well as advice on brushes and substrates, surfaces and supports. You will be provided with experienced one-to-one tuition as well as group discussions about the work made.

There will also be tuition on a selection of historical and contemporary landscape painters.

Learning Methods

Methods of delivery include: demonstrations, individual/group discussion and studio-based practice.

You are taught by specialist staff who will offer practical advice and instruction together with personal encouragement in discovering individual creative skills. You will receive general instruction and one-to-one tuition tailored to suit your personal level of experience and ability.

A complete health and safety induction will take place on commencement of the course.


This course is not formally assessed. 


Academic Support

Students are encouraged to inform us at the time of enrolment of information relating to a disability, medical condition or specific learning difficulty.

The Inclusion Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia and other specific learning differences. Applicants with profound physical or sensory disabilities are encouraged to arrange a pre-entry visit to discuss any concerns and to view the facilities.

Study Skills Support

The Study Support Team provides training and support to all students in academic writing, study skills, maths and statistics, English language and information technology.


This course is tailored to the individual. It is open to participants wishing to revisit or maintain their painting practice or beginners seeking advice and improvement. 

Required Age

All students are required to be at least 16 years of age on the commencement of this course.

Materials & Equipment

You must provide drawing OR painting materials of your choice.

Drawing: e.g. rubber, pencil or charcoal, pastels, chalks.

Painting: painting medium of choice, e.g. gouache, acrylics, or oils, a selection of brushes, palette or mixing tray, jars or tubs for holding media and cleaning brushes, rags for cleaning.

Drawing or Painting: support (paper, card, canvas board or canvas, size variable)

If using oil: please use a solvent substitute such as Sansador or Zest-it. No turpentine or white spirit will be permitted.

Students will access travel equipment: easels, drawing-boards and stools. Some basic drawing materials will be provided.

Car Parking

Parking restrictions and payment apply at the Bennachie Visitor Centre. The cost of this will be around £6.


A refund is only applicable where there has been illness with a medical certificate to support it.

Gray's Art Shop

Located within the Gray’s building, the Art Shop stocks a wide range of specialist materials, papers and equipment for all kinds of creative ventures. Open to all, both student and non-student, with very competitive prices, the staff are on hand and happy to help. Open between 9am-3.30pm Monday to Friday and a selection of dates over each term to accommodate the Short Course students.

Staff appreciate many Short Course students are busy through the day, so they are happy to take phone orders that can be collected from reception at a later/more convenient time for students.


For new intakes course fees are reviewed and published annually for each mode of delivery. Tuition fees are fixed for the duration of a course at the rate confirmed in the offer letter.  For further information see:
