Managers are required at all stages of the construction process from inception through construction to maintaining our built environment. This Construction Management degree has been developed in collaboration with industry and the professions to provide a broad based education on design, construction and commercial management to prepare you for a rewarding career as a construction professional.

There is a focus on operational and production issues associated with the construction of buildings and infrastructure projects and there is numerous opportunities for you to develop areas of particular expertise relevant to your personal interests. Your specialist knowledge and skills will be developed to enable you to manage the building process from inception through to demolition in a professional and sustainable manner.

This course is only available for direct entry to Year 3 from September 2021.

You will continue to gain a critical awareness of building technology and the design and construction processes. Your understanding of general management techniques and their application in communicating and motivating an interdisciplinary team to bring about the successful completion of a project will be established.

You will have the opportunity to participate in the Exchange Programme or a period of industrial placement.

 

YEAR 4

To promote the ability to undertake advanced study in construction with a proper concern for scholarship and rigour, and undertake critical investigation using appropriate research methods and independent, self-motivated skills. You can use the dissertation module to advance your knowledge gained in the industry placement.

Detailed module information

Our teaching is directly informed and guided by new industrial developments emerging in the areas of technology and management, as well as by research carried out by our staff within the School.

Your range of knowledge and skill is developed through a varied programme of projects, lectures, tutorials and practical hands-on activities. Activities include group projects which replicate the team-working skills required in industry. Our learning is ‘hands on’ and you will work seamlessly between drawings, computer packages and note taking.

In addition to classroom based lectures and workshops, you will be able to take part in organised visits to construction sites, attend CPD events organised by local branches of the professional bodies and hear from industry professionals.

Independent Study

As you progress, the level of independent learning increases significantly within specialist areas of the course. You are expected to have the confidence to apply your knowledge to more complex contexts and work on your initiative as you progress towards graduation.

Staff Delivering on This Course

We operate an open-door policy and enjoy strong relations between our students and staff. All of the teaching staff on this course have many years of professional experience at a senior level, and many are Chartered Construction Managers and Builders.

All staff have teaching qualifications, including fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, recognising their practice, impact and leadership in teaching and learning.

We involve distinguished practitioners as core members of our teaching team, which directly connects your learning to professional practice. You will benefit from lectures and presentations from visiting practitioners as well as site visits and field studies.

Feedback

We aim to provide you with feedback within 20 working days of hand-in for all written exams, coursework and practical exams.

Placements

In Semester 2 of Year 3 you will have the opportunity to undertake a four to nine month paid industrial placement allowing you to gain valuable professional experience in a particular aspect of the construction or energy industry.

We have a Placement Office to support you in securing a placement, however most students achieve placement from their own independent networking.

Study Abroad

In Year 3 you can undertake a period of study in Europe with one of our European partner institutions or undertake a further semester of academic study which includes a module that simulates industrial experience.

Job Prospects

On completion of the course you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills required to meet the challenges facing the Construction Manager in a modern and rapidly changing world.

There are a variety of organisations you could progress into including commercial, retail and leisure organisations, local and central government, housing associations or private practice.

Many of our graduates work in project management roles, ensuring construction projects are completed according to specification and in accordance with all safety guidelines.
