Volunteer for sport (VFS) is an award winning volunteer programme open to all Robert Gordon University students.

At a recent Scottish Student Sport awards dinner VFS was ranked as the joint top sport volunteer programme in Scotland in both Further and Higher education, a fantastic result for a programme only in its second year! With new plans afoot and an additional 2 new coaching pathways in place VFS is going from strength to strength and wants you to join us and be part of this exciting time in 2013 - 2014.

Some highlights from last year’s programme include VFS volunteers working with the Scottish Rugby team, VFS volunteers helping out a number of world class athletes with their S&C training, VFS students volunteering at events such as the “Glasgow 2014 1 year to go celebration”, “The Golden Games” Glasgow 2014’s “LEAD 2014” programme and also contributing to over 250 hours of sports provision for the local Aberdeen community ranging from facility tours for nursery aged children around RGU: SPORT all the way up to volunteering in adult community sports clubs.

The sport and physical activity industry is expanding rapidly throughout the UK and after an amazing Olympic games in 2012 and the exciting upcoming Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth games there has never been a better time to become involved.

There is a high interest in becoming involved in sport and being part of an exciting legacy and here at RGU: SPORT YOU have the opportunity to be part of it! We can help you to assist in changing people’s lives for the better and to help inspire a whole new generation of children and young athletes.

By improving the health and well-being of children, increasing individuals self esteem and the opportunity to be part of the rewarding world of sport delivery and being able to possibly kick start the career of a future Olympian. It can all start right now by enrolling onto RGU: SPORT’s VFS programme.

You also have the opportunity to develop yourself as an individual by gaining the invaluable experience necessary to project yourself into future employment, build your own self confidence and identify your ambitions.

Either way you look at it VFS can benefit both yourself and others. It’s an exciting programme that offers you opportunities to gain expensive qualifications and further your skills and knowledge base and yet cost yourself absolutely nothing in monetary terms!

One of the major advantages of the VFS programme is that you will be placed on a progressive coaching pathway that will see you develop from a basic coaching certificate all the way up to becoming an established and qualified UKCC Level 2 coach. You as a volunteer will become First Aid qualified and trained in Child protection. Not to mention a free PVG check and the option of other related workshops like SportScotland’s “Positive Coaching Scotland” programme and the ability to use every hour you are involved with the VFS programme towards a Saltire award. There really are a lot of reasons to get involved with RGU: SPORT’S VFS programme. VFS will even pay for your transport to and from your Aberdeen home and Coaching venue. VFS recognises the demand’s and needs of both students and sports coaches and have developed the VFS programme to make everything as straight forward and free of charge as possible.

For the Academic year 2013/14 the following coaching pathways will be in place:

  • Basketball
  • Indoor Climbing
  • Hockey
  • Rowing
  • Rugby
  • Athletics
