As Graduate School Leader for the IHWR Graduate School, Dr Knott is responsible for the research students within the Institute of Health & Welfare Research (IHWR) with respect to their management, training and for the strategic development of the research student population.

  • Reader in research methods, molecular and cell biology, biotherapy, pharmacogenomics and pharmacogenetics at the School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences

Key research interests

Dr Knott's research skills are in the area of molecular and cell biology. Recent research projects that Dr Knott has been involved in include:

  • Control of molecular interactions with the surface of medical devices: endothelial cell growth and migration.
  • The development of an eye gel for the treatment of the ophthalmic complications in cystinotic patients.
  • Comparative study of the effects of selected therapeutics on the expression of the hypoxia-induced factor 1 alpha in retinal tissue under hyperglycaemic and hypoxic conditions.
  • The effects of self-guided breath and vocal exercises on high blood pressure.


Teaching

Dr Knott is a member of the Course Management Team for the Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methods, and teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate students in the area of research methods, molecular and cell biology, biotherapy, pharmacogenomics and pharmacogenetics.  She is a Professional Member of Diabetes UK and the Biochemical Society, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
