Votes for students

The Aberdeen Students’ Forum (ASF), representing the two universities and two colleges in Aberdeen, is calling on the last remaining of the 60,000 students in Aberdeen to register to vote in the General Election on the 6th May.

"The 20th April 5pm deadline to register to vote or postal vote is now here” said Aberdeen University Students’ Association Education President James Simpson, “but it is vital that students who haven’t registered as yet, realise that they still have until 5pm April 27th to register for voting by proxy where you can register someone you know and trust (maybe a parent or guardian) to vote on your behalf.”

All the details with answers to frequently asked question can be found on the Facebook page ‘Aberdeen Votes for Students’ where there is also a link to a guide where students can choose policies not parties.  For more advice students can also go to www.aboutmyvote.co.uk or go to Woodhill House, Westburn Road Aberdeen AB16 5GE where they can hand in registration forms before 5pm 20th April or call 01224 664360.

The ASF is urging Aberdeen students and supporters of investment in education to sign up to the pledge ‘Vote for Students’ one of the biggest and most successful campaigns in the history of the National Union of Students (NUS).

Depute President Elect of NUS Scotland and Robert Gordon University student Jennifer Cádiz highlights,
“Signing up to the pledge on www.voteforstudents.co.uk means that students are pledging to vote for the political parties which have a dedicated and positive investment in education policy in their manifestos, which is vital so that we can hold them to account.”

Students in Scotland make up 15% of the electorate so their vote is significant in such a close run contest.
