Sarah designs creative career at Gray’s

A Lerwick student who recently won a competition for budding UK artists and designers to create their own bespoke wallpaper for a mobile phone model is celebrating graduating from Robert Gordon University (RGU).

Sarah LeaskSarah Leask (22) graduated from Gray’s School of Art at RGU with a BA (Hons) in Communication Design (Illustration) on Friday, July 15 at His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen.

The former Anderson High School pupil was announced as the winner of a competition run by phone company Three in May, which saw her design ‘Lemon Drizzle’ voted most popular by the public on social media. It is now available as a wallpaper on the Samsung S7 model.

Sarah said: “My four years in Aberdeen has been fantastic. I have met so many lovely friends through art school as well as part of a sports team. I would definitely recommend RGU as a university to study at, everyone has been so friendly.”

Sarah said that she initially struggled to find her feet on the course as she adjusted from a fine art background to a more design-led approach.

“I never really saw myself as a designer before studying at Gray’s School of Art,” she said. “Initially I did struggle to fit in to my course due to the fact that I came from mainly an art background which meant I wasn’t as familiar with some of the programs and methods of working that graphic design and illustration requires.

“However, I managed to overcome this and learnt enough technical skills to produce the work that I need to.

“Design, in general, will open up more career opportunities for me so I will be forever grateful to the tutors here at Gray’s that I was selected for a design course over an art based one.”

Sarah added: “The personal highlight of my time at uni was probably the Gray’s Degree Show opening night. I absolutely loved it as so many of my family and friends came to see what I had been working towards for the last four years which was a really great feeling.”

Sarah is now focused on starting her career and said: “I’m looking forward to starting a new adventure as a freelance illustrator.  I’m planning on staying here in Aberdeen and working from a small studio in town. I’m hoping to get involved in several aspects of the creative industry here in Aberdeen.”
