Over the past decade, the social life of teens has moved online. Their lives have been revolutionised by easy access to social media tools 24/7.
Professor Sarah Pedersen, Director of Research at the Department of Communication, Marketing and Media, Robert Gordon University (RGU), will discuss some of the challenges for teens offered by social media and discuss how they can stay safe at TechFest this weekend.
Prof Pedersen’s teaching and research focus on the use of social media in Britain today, including Twitter, Facebook, blogs, Instagram, Frape, cyberbullying, sexting and porn.
She said: “It is vitally important that parents are aware of the challenges and opportunities offered to their children by social media. I firmly believe that if your child is on Facebook or using SnapChat you should too. How will you be able to offer them advice if you do not understand what they are doing?”
Prof Pedersen will be talking at TechFest on Saturday Sept 3 at The Gordon Barracks at 10am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm.
