It has been a supremely successful year for an inspirational Edinburgh-born woman, who has been named as Britain’s leading student midwife by the Council of Deans of Health.

Mhairi McLellan, a second year student at RGU's School of Nursing and Midwifery won the Top #150Leaders Midwife award earlier this month, at a ceremony held at the Royal College of Physicians in London.

It was the crowning moment for Mhairi and seven fellow students from across the country, who were celebrated having successfully taken part in the #150Leaders Student Leadership Programme.

Mhairi said: “It was such an honour even to be nominated for the #150Leaders award, let alone win and I can’t thank whoever nominated me enough.

The Student Leadership Programme in a Council of Deans initiative that offers innovative ways for developing leadership in future healthcare professionals. Targeted at 150 students of nursing, midwifery and allied health professional courses across the UK, the programme offers exposure to leadership training, networking and mentoring.

Looking back on her time as one of the #150Leaders, Mhairi said: “Even before starting the Student Leadership Programme, I decided to respond to every opportunity with a big yes. I have had some truly fantastic experiences.

“I have spoken at conferences, written for midwifery journals, I became the co-editor and curator of a blog and a journal aimed at student midwives on the All4Maternity platform, and so much more. It keeps me very busy, but I love being involved in so many things that support other student midwives.”

Mhairi’s success is a further testament to the hard work of the staff and students at RGU’s School of Nursing and Midwifery – with the School’s Midwifery lecturers recently being named as Midwifery Team of the Year at the Scottish Maternal and Midwifery Festival.

Fiona Gibb, Senior Midwifery Lecturer and Lead Midwife for Education at RGU, said: “We could not be more proud of Mhairi, who deserves every accolade coming her way.

“It is incredible achievement simply to be one of the #150Leaders, but to be named as the country’s top midwifery student shows outstanding leadership skills that will see her flourish as she progresses in her career.”

With the year coming towards an end, Mhairi added: “I truly believe I have found my calling in midwifery. It means so much to me to have the privilege to support women and families during such an important time in their lives.”
