Inverness student clocks up the miles for RGU degree


An Inverness student has clocked up thousands of miles travelling across the north of Scotland to complete his degree at Robert Gordon University (RGU).

Aunal Gautam with his wife Preeti.Mr Aunal Gautam (50) made the 200 mile round trip between Inverness and Aberdeen for a year and a half to complete his two-year Social Work studies.

He graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma at a ceremony at Aberdeen Music Hall on Tuesday, December 9.

Originally from Nepal, Aunal holds a Master’s Degree in Economics and moved to the UK in 2006. Since then he worked as a Substance Misuse Officer with The Highland Council before starting at RGU.

With his new qualification Aunal now works as a social worker in the local authority’s Children and Families team and works hard to help to those who are in need of social work services.  

He said: “I’m glad to have successfully completed the course after two years of hard work and determination. Travelling from Inverness to Aberdeen every day and then being separated from my family while I stayed in Aberdeen for six months was not easy.

“I’ve been looking for career progression in my profession and the qualification from RGU has been a great learning experience.

“All of my life I have been interested in helping others and I love to see people thriving and becoming better individuals. The course has widened my horizons and enabled me to help those who are in need of assistance.”
