Industry prize for Oldmeldrum student

An Oldmeldrum student has picked up an industry prize for his academic achievements during his postgraduate degree at Robert Gordon University (RGU).

Kristian LowKristian Low (35), who is also celebrating graduating with an MSc Construction Project Management degree with distinction, was awarded the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) prize at a special ceremony held by RGU’s Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment last week.

Kristian, who is originally from West Sussex but has been living in Oldmeldrum for over a decade, said: “I feel that it's a prize for my family, as well as me, as they supported me through a busy and difficult year. I felt that I had to produce outstanding work to compete with the younger students on my course.

“To have won a prize on top of the great results I got is very flattering and I'm grateful to the lecturers and supervisors that helped me achieve as much as I did. My class-mates were a great help too, giving motivation and assistance where it was needed!”

Looking back at his decision to embark on the course, he said: “I’ve always been very interested in construction and during an open evening at RGU, I spoke at length to course leader Rob Leslie and thought it sounded very interesting and exactly what I would like to do as a career.

“The most challenging thing was doing full-time work around the full-time degree, as well as having four children at home at the same time. Basically, my life during the past year was very busy and everything had to be planned and organised carefully.

“Within the course, probably the greatest challenge was reducing the words I had in assignments to fit into the word limit - I had a lot to say!”

Kristian, who is now hoping to get a project manager role in construction and start his career in the industry, as well as undertake a PhD, added: “I found the staff at the university to be incredibly friendly and very helpful. The course content and the lessons were bright, lively and stimulating. I particularly enjoyed the site visits that were organised, they added immensely to the learning.”
