IIT and RGU team up to deliver Sri Lanka’s first MSc in Big Data Analytics


Robert Gordon University (RGU) has teamed up with Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) in Sri Lanka to help deliver the country’s first Big Data Analytics MSc postgraduate degree programme.

IIT MSc Big Data Analytics Sri LankaThe MSc, which will be RGU’s first validated program that is delivered entirely from outside the UK and indeed Europe, was announced at an international technical forum on Big Data Analytics hosted by IIT in Sri Lanka. At the event, leading researchers and experts in the field of data science shared key insight, their experiences and challenges in the field of Big Data.

Speakers at the forum included Professor Chrisina Jayne and Dr Nirmalie Wiratunga from RGU’s School of Computing Science and Digital Media, Professor Frans Coenen from the University of Liverpool’s Department of Computer Science, University of Liverpool and Dr Srinath Perera, Vice President, Research, at WSO2.

Many Fortune 500 and large multinational conglomerates use Big Data to boost the growth of their companies and to make strategic decisions which will lead to growth. It has a variety of applications ranging from healthcare, security and optimising machine and device performance, smart cities and telecommunication.

RGU’s MSc in Big Data Analytics will now be offered at IIT campus from September and aims to produce specialist data scientists with training in industry relevant data acquisition, storage, warehousing, analytics and visualization tools and techniques and a good understanding of the needs of industry.

The course will prepare graduates in technical disciplines for a career in the design and implementation use of computer-analytics and visualisation solutions for industry.

Deputy Principal at RGU, Professor John Harper, said he welcomed the partnership with IIT.

“We both share a strong industry focus and top rankings in employability. I am confident it will lead to even greater knowledge sharing and research collaboration in years ahead,” Prof. Harper said.
