Fraserburgh’s William nets top degree and job

One young Fraserburgh student will be well ahead of the game when he graduates from Robert Gordon University at 2.30pm on Friday 4 December. William West (22) from Fraser Crescent, Inverallochy, has successfully combined his footballing career with studying for a MEng Mechanical Engineering.

William even managed to pass his Honours exams whilst playing centre midfield for Highland League side, Fraserburgh in a cup final against Inverurie Locos! Although Fraserburgh lost 2-1, William went on to pass his exams with flying colours. William said, "I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and wasn't fazed at all. I find football very enjoyable, and in fact it probably helped me cope with the stress of exams as I was totally focused on the game for 90 minutes. I didn't play as well as I should have, as the studying left little time for training, but overall we were really unlucky to lose."

As part of his studies, the former Fraserburgh Academy pupil also completed a work experience placement with Petrofac, and has now accepted a full-time position with the energy company, as a graduate mechanical engineer. He said, "I think the opportunity to carry out a placement whilst at university is crucial. Not only did I receive industrial experience in the Petrofac offices, but I was fortunate enough to be put through my survival course by Petrofac and visit the Heather and Thistle platforms, which are operated by them. Travelling on helicopters, familiarising myself with being on an offshore platform, and generally getting used to the surroundings offshore has been an invaluable experience."

He went on to say, "I was absolutely delighted to land this job. I have now taken up my position and I'm getting on really well. Already I'm taking on some of the responsibilities from the support engineers in the day-to-day operations of the platform, which is a really good grounding for me going offshore in the new year. I'm now really looking forward to building my career in the oil and gas sector."
