Ellon locals score top accolades at Scott Sutherland Show 2011

Two Ellon students have received prestigious awards at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment End of Year Show 2011.

Louise Nicol and Jeff HaileyLouise Nicol and Jeff Hailey received their accolades at the exhibition’s private opening event on Wednesday 15 June. The End of Year Show, which is now open to the public until Thursday 30 June, showcases a range of student projects, spanning architecture, surveying, architectural technology, and construction design and management (CDM).

Louise (24), who comes from Edmondside, Pitmedden, received the Best Stage Four Student in CDM award for her performance in her final year. Unlike her fellow students, Louise completed her degree in a part-time capacity over a five and a half year period.

She combined her studies with a full time job as a Construction Engineer for Aberdeenshire Council where her responsibilities include looking after bridge maintenance, demolition and reconstruction projects throughout the region.  She is involved in the whole process, from initial pricing of a project, to site supervision of the works, through to final completion.

Louise’s dissertation investigates the impact of environmental legislation on bridgework projects in Aberdeenshire. She explains: “My investigation proved to be a controversial topic as it involved an analysis of the timescales and costs of protecting the environment when carrying out construction and maintenance work on bridges. It was interesting to investigate through local case studies exactly what percentage of the total project cost is spent on protecting our environment.”

Commenting on her award, Louise said: “I am delighted to have won Best Student for my final year. It makes the hard work of completing my final year modules along with dissertation combined with full-time employment all worthwhile. Completing my degree whilst working full-time has been challenging, however I look forward to leaving university with not only a BSc honours degree but also over six years experience in the construction industry.”

Louise will graduate on 15 July at a morning ceremony held in His Majesty’s Theatre, after which she will continue in her position at the council and work towards achieving Incorporated or Chartered status with the Institute of Civil Engineers.

A fellow CDM student, Jeff (20), who comes from Chestnut Place, received the Best Stage Three Student accolade in recognition of his achievements during a second semester placement in the new Emergency Care Centre currently under construction at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI).

His placement, which is with contractors Robertson Construction Group, has seen Jeff gain insights into a variety of roles and activities from a contractor point of view including site/subcontractor management, building processes and commercial/financial management.

Referring to his experience with the company and his award, Jeff said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my work experience so far. The award came as a huge surprise. I wasn’t expecting it at all so it was a very welcome bonus to round off what has been a great year.”

Jeff will finish his placement in July, but will remain with the company on a part-time basis through his final year of studies until he graduates in summer 2012.

Upon leaving university Jeff aims to secure a position as graduate site manager, a position that his wealth of experience within and outside of his studies will put him in good stead for.

Head of School, Dr David McClean commented:
“I would like to congratulate Louise, Jeff and all winners at this year’s ceremony. The End of Year Show is an important celebration of the work of the School, and amply displays the commitment, imagination and dedication of our students and staff.”

Taking place at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment on Garthdee Road, Aberdeen, the End of Year Show is open to the public from daily up to Thursday 30 June inclusive, Monday to Saturday 9.00am – 6.00pm and Sunday 11.00-5.00pm.
