Bryan graduated with an upper second class BSc (Hons) in Psychology from Glasgow Caledonian University, and followed this with an MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Bangor University, gaining a distinction. Following a short stint as a seminar tutor at Glasgow Caledonian University, Bryan took up the post of KTP Associate at Robert Gordon University in April 2010. Based at Transition Extreme Sports Ltd., Bryan developed an innovative and award winning adrenaline sport-based education programme for disengaged young people – The Alternative Academy. The Alternative Academy became one of the leading youth programmes in the region, and Bryan assisted in developing and securing funding for a range of other social programmes at Transition Extreme.
Bryan’s teaching interests focus on the psychology of sport and exercise participation. He is also placement coordinator for the BSc (Hons) Applied Sport and Exercise Science course, and works with a range of external organisations to develop opportunities for students to gain the best possible real-life experiences on placement. Bryan also leads on the award-winning citywide Aberdeen Youth Games project, developed in partnership with Sport Aberdeen. This sport and citizenship programme saw over 1000 pupils from 34 primary schools attend a Commonwealth Games-themed festival of sport in May 2014.
Bryan is a BPS Charted and HCPC Accredited Sport and Exercise Psychologist, and currently provides psychological support to a range of athletes. He is experienced providing support to a range of national, international and Olympic level athletes in a range of sports, including football, golf, swimming, table tennis and skiing. He is also currently coordinating nationwide sport psychology support for the Scottish Football Association (SFA) Performance School programme. Bryan also has experience providing sport psychology workshops for players, coaches and sports officials for organisations such as the SFA, The Camanachd Association and Sport Scotland.
Bryan is currently studying for a PhD, investigating the development of motivation within youth sport, with a particular focus on elite youth footballers.
