Duties and Responsibilities
Role and Background
Dr Simone Kurtzke is a lecturer in Communication, Marketing and Media and her main areas of teaching and research are digital and social media marketing. She worked in the digital industry for eleven years (both agency and client-side) and joined RGU in September 2013.
Simone teaches on Scotland's first practice-based Masters in Digital Marketing where she is the module co-ordinator for Digital Marketing Strategy, Digital PR, and Digital Marketing Project – an alternative to the conventional dissertation. This module allows students to develop and execute a real marketing communications project in conjunction with a live client (e.g. external business or organisation).
Simone has contributed to developing the digital marketing and communications curriculum across the School, as well as teaching in the areas of International Marketing, Marketing planning and strategy and related subjects. In addition, Simone supervises Marketing and Business Management dissertations at Undergraduate, Masters and PhD level.

Simone holds a BA in English / Women's Studies and an MA in Digital Moving Image from London Guildhall University. Her PhD from Edinburgh’s Queen Margaret University investigated online video and its production and consumption from 1998-2005 – the area of ‘web 1.0′, just before the breakthrough of YouTube (2006) and the advent of social media.
Simone’s research interests are digital marketing communications in SMEs including in the B2B (industrial marketing) context. She is furthermore exploring the use of digital marketing industry research and concepts (such as Content Marketing and Search Engine Optimisation) within academia. Her applied research aims to bridge the gap between marketing education and 21st century industry needs.
