The Graduate Certificate Management course offers a pre-Masters route in Business/Management for those who do not have a business background.

The Graduate Certificate course is ideal if you have relevant work experience but do not meet the academic entry requirements of the course. If you have five years management experience or wish to update your professional and business skills, this course is for you.

The short (36 weeks) online course covers key business skills of People Management, the Management Environment and Managing Finance. We combine these core Management topics with a foundation in Management subjects and the experience of academic study in preparation for postgraduate study.

On completing this course, you will be eligible to apply for one of our many Masters Business courses to help you progress further in your career.

You will gain an introduction to Business and Management, examining the key issues associated with the internal and external environment within which organisations operate.

Your HR skills are developed and you gain an understanding of how people work together as well as an understanding of the published financial statements of an organisation and internal management accounting requirements.

  • This course is delivered through online distance learning, taught through CampusMoodle, the university’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which offers you complete flexibility of where and when to study.

    You can continue to work full-time without the need for a career break and enhance your career through academic study and practical application of the theory.

    CampusMoodle offers access to tutors and other class members. You are expected to participate fully in the online learning experience and engage with the learning process as part of a group of online learners within a supportive online community setting.

    As an online learner, you are part of a 'virtual cohort'. The communication and interaction amongst members of the cohort is a significant aspect of the learning process, in particular, in group-related activities.

    All successful applicants are offered the chance to log into CampusMoodle before you start the course. This gives you the opportunity to view course information, ask questions and find out more.

    Independent study summary

    Online study requires you to take full responsibility for your learning. It is important that you access the virtual environment on a regular basis. Online activities, reading and assessment preparation should take around 12-15 hours per week.

    CampusMoodle will be your primary learning environment. Local students are welcome to use the on campus facilities of library and Georgina Scott Sutherland Study Centre.

    How you are assessed

    You will be assessed via completion of a final report.


    We aim to provide you with feedback within 20 working days of hand-in for all written exams, coursework and practical exams.

    Each application is individually assessed based on previous qualifications and the level of experience.

    You should have two years’ relevant business management experience.

    It is expected that you will already be in employment or have recent work experience. Work placements are not provided on this course.

    Course fees are reviewed periodically and so are subject to change for new applicants. All tuition fees are fixed for the duration of a course at the rate confirmed in your offer letter. You will also be liable to pay a graduation fee of £40 before receiving a University award.

    Students are grouped into cohorts with the next cohort commencing in September. Applications for admission to the course are NOW OPEN. These should be received by 31 August to allow sufficient time to process. 

    Students are required to enrol at least a week prior to the first academic module in order to undertake an on-line induction.
