Health Professions Placements: For Students

Practice Placements are a core part of the Health Professions Courses. Placements take place throughout the four years of study, allowing students to put to practice the academic knowledge they have gained and learn from experienced practitioners.

Nursing and Midwifery

The following courses are made up of approximately 50% of clinical practice. Students undertake placements in a variety of settings. More information can be found on our pages for  Practice Education Nursing and Midwifery.

Other Health Professions

  • Nutrition BSc (Hons): There is a 12 week practical placement in year 4. Students undertake a work based project alongside a nutritionist in research, the food industry or a government agency. More information can be found on the Nutrition BSc (Hons) Placements Website.
  • Nutrition and Dietetics BSc (Hons): Nutrition and Dietetics BSc (Hons): You will undertake three placements, integrated in years 2, 3 and 4, totalling 1000 hours of practice.  Students are allocated to placements in NHS Health Boards throughout Scotland, and will work alongside Dietitians in hospitals and community practices.   • Diagnostic Radiography BSc (Hons) - You will undertake 6 clinical placements which are spread across every year of the course. Students work in a range of radiography settings including major regional centres, district general hospitals, community settings and  specialist cross sectional imaging facilities.   
  • Occupational Therapy BSc Hons BSc (Hons) - The six practice education placements are in a variety of settings throughout Scotland.
  • Pharmacy MPharm- Clinical placements during your studies allow you to consolidate your practical skills and learn from experienced clinicians.
  • Physiotherapy BSc (Hons) - There are seven clinical placements, with the first one beginning at the end of year 1.
  • Physiotherapy (Pre-registration) MSc - Students undertake six placements that are spread throughout the course.
