Core Business Skills [SUM402] 15 Credits at SCQF level 11

1. Overview

One of a set of 9 competency-led topics that have been designed in close collaboration with industry practitioners and incorporate real world case studies and scenarios.

They are accredited by both the RICS and CIOB and align with the RICS competency framework.

This module will provide an overview of core business skills pertinent to the management of commercial practice within the energy sectors and critically appraise alternative approaches and practices.

  • Business and accounting principles
  • Financial analysis and company statements
  • Taxation of companies
  • Corporate growth, failure and recovery
  • Business planning, and leadership in the energy sector
  • Negotiation
  • Uncertainty and risks in financial planning
  • Total cost of ownership economics
  • Cost modelling

3. How you will learn

Learning will take place through the University virtual campus with a mix of online lectures, tutorials and self guided study. Each topic with the Module will have a number of self required and obligatory activities aimed at emphasising the learning. Your also required to contribute to number of discussion forums on particular subject matter and case studies.

6. Prospects

At the end of this module you will have a broad knowledge and understanding of the energy and renewable sectors. You could progress to other modules within the commercial practice course to gain additional credits towards the full MSc. This will give you the qualification to work within the energy sector as commercial manager and other fields with the energy sector. 

7. Assessment

The module will be assessed by one main piece of coursework and a number of specified activities.
