The delivery of high quality healthcare is a rapidly evolving process which calls for dynamic and innovative education programmes for nurses and midwives; programmes of study that address the needs of individuals, families and communities.
In Scotland, across the UK and internationally, challenges emerge that require new and pioneering approaches in the delivery of healthcare and healthcare education. These developments often contest the current knowledge, skills and evidence base that underpins nursing and midwifery practice. Robert Gordon University is central in taking forward this agenda and we work collaboratively with practice partners and others to proactively respond with creative and flexible approaches to education, scholarship and research.
At the heart of our philosophy is the development of practitioners who have caring and compassion as central tenets of their educational experience. Inter-professional learning is a core feature of our programmes.
We deliver high quality undergraduate programmes in adult nursing, mental health nursing and children and young people’s nursing, as well as being one of only 3 providers of pre-registration midwifery programmes in Scotland. These programmes are highly praised by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and valued by our local NHS and private sector partners. In addition, they deliver excellent employment prospects for our graduates.
The School provides a range of modules, short courses and degrees at Honours and Masters levels for qualified practitioners, focusing on key contemporary areas of practice which include; clinical practice, advanced clinical practice, community nursing, health visiting and occupational health nursing. We also support the delivery of PhDs and Professional Doctorates within the Institute of Health and Wellbeing Research Graduate School.
Our staff are highly educated, skilled and experts in their field and we have a strong programme of scholarship and research within the School. Our academic and support staff are committed to providing an excellent student experience, both in University and on practice placement. Robust international partnerships have been developed that can provide opportunities for both staff and students to gain experience abroad.

Bachelors Degrees (Pre-Registration)
The pre-registration nursing portfolio has been developed in accordance with the Standards for Pre-registration Nursing Education, published by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
Bachelors Degrees (Post-Registration)
The learning platforms range from campus-based study sessions, to distance and online learning – popular with nurses and midwives who can fit their study around busy work and home life. Expert practitioners from practice also contribute to the students’ learning experience.
This course aims to equip students with contemporary knowledge to have a key public health role in promoting optimum health and well-being of the working age population as well as in health protection and safety. It will enable a critical, innovative and reflective approach to public health nursing.
This course aims to equip students with contemporary knowledge to address vulnerabilities, tackle inequalities and promote optimum health across the life span, with a particular focus on young children and vulnerable families. It will enable a critical, innovative and reflective approach to public health nursing.
Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
The continuous professional development (CPD) courses are developed in partnership with the local health authorities and range from short accredited or non-accredited courses to degree, honours degree level on to masters degree level and beyond.
We understand that the nursing practice is constantly changing, and aspiring practitioners are increasingly expected to develop new skills and knowledge that will further enhance the quality of patient care.
To help in achieving work-life balance the midwifery CPD portfolio also offers a range of courses with flexible methods of online distance learning, work based learning and blended learning.
The course is a comprehensive programme of preparation that develops and supports an advanced level of practice to ensure they can engage with patients to deliver safe, effective and person centred care. Students can also opt to incorporate the RCN accreditation for Advanced Nurse Practice award.
This new course is aimed at experienced registered nurses with experience in acute or primary care settings, who wish to build on their experience and transfer their learning in order to develop the higher level of knowledge and skills required for specialist and advanced practice in district nursing.
This research programme offers a range of research topic areas within the field of nursing and midwifery that can be explored to attain a MRes, MPhil or PhD qualification.
From 2011 we now offer the Doctorate of Professional Practice (DPP) for those focusing on professional practice applications.
The School has developed a model of scholarship based largely on the work of Ernest Boyer (1990). The 4 main areas of scholarship that are advanced by School staff are Discover, Application, Integration and Learning & Teaching.
Solution Focused Interactions is the hub of a growing community of scholars, academics, therapists, and practitioners coming together to share their experience of working in solution focused interactions.

The school has developed a focused and innovative portfolio of courses to support the rising demand for professional nursing education overseas by offering a flexible approach to both learning and teaching.
Our distance and blended learning courses enable our students to study at a time and pace that suits their work commitments and home life. Learning occurs both individually and within a group environment, featuring formal and informal discussion forums facilitated through our virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle. Consultant practitioners, clinicians and guests also contribute to the learning experience.
International students who are currently enrolled in the school are situated across the globe in parts of USA, Malawi, Nigeria, Qatar, Finland, Holland, Spain and other locations in the EU. The learning platforms provided for distance and online learning is not only used by international students, but is also popular with local practising nurses and midwives who undertake these courses.

The following courses are offered by the school for international distance learning.
This course has been developed for occupational health professionals and people who are currently working in occupational health following a non-NMC route for qualified health professionals overseas.
This contemporary course is designed to provide aspiring healthcare professionals with a comprehensive programme of preparation that develops an advanced level of practice. The non RCN route can be undertaken by international students.
This course has been developed for nurses working in public health and the non NMC route can be followed by health professionals overseas.
Erasmus European Exchange
The school has established exchange links with the nine European countries shown on the map below.
The School of Nursing & Midwifery supports twenty-eight third year undergraduate nursing students (to and from one of our European Partners) to experience professional clinical learning for a study period of three months. Incoming nursing students will undertake the Professional Nursing Practice for International Students and be eligible for 20 ECTS credits upon successful completion.
Eight members of teaching staff (to and from one of our European Link Partners) are also supported to undertake an exchange experience of five days (Inclusive of travel). Teaching staff from our school incorporate clinical audit, teaching and student support activities during their visits to our European Partners. Non-academic staff are also encouraged to participate in an exchange opportunity to undertake a training experience of five days (Inclusive of travel).
European Network for Nursing in Higher Education (ENNE)
The school is a member of the ENNE network, which actively promotes the development of a dynamic European University and supports European Exchanges for students and staff via the Erasmus Lifelong Learning Programme.
The work of ENNE (opens in new window) primarily involves student-centred education (e.g. Problem-Based Learning), bachelor degree in nurse education and interdisciplinary & multicultural approaches in nurse education.
Key activities of ENNE include:
- An annual intensive program of learning for students that focuses on nursing in a multicultural society
- Student and teacher exchanges
- Projects such as: nursing in a multicultural society (intensive programs), developing and sharing interchangeable modules in nursing, sharing the expertise in PBL (e.g. conferences, educating teachers on PBL), and developing European Nursing Education in general (curriculum development, new teaching and learning approaches)

European Federation of Nurse Educators (FINE)
Through the exchange and sharing of best practices, we encourage stronger curricula and educational methodologies at an international level.
As members of the FINE Association (Opens in new window) we understand a society's cultural and historical identity whilst promoting quality assurance and professionalism in nursing education. The objectives of the FINE Association are:
- To foster understanding and respect for cultural and historical identity whilst promoting optimal solutions to similar problems
- To promote quality assurance and professionalism in nursing education
- To compare curricula, study programmes and educational methodology, and to compare and debate educational structures, levels and teacher education, in order to harmonise and improve curricula and study programmes
- To promote international exchange and cooperation
- To inform and to influence external groups and organisations in education and health care on national and international levels
- To influence policy on national and international level in the European Union

Grampian-Houston Association (GHA) Exchange
The Grampian-Houston Association (GHA) is a group of individuals who aim to foster links with Houston, Texas, along with their sister group, Houston-Grampian Association (HGA).
Since 1995 students from Robert Gordon University's School of Nursing & Midwifery have had the opportunity to participate in a two-week exchange programme with Houston Baptist University (Opens in new window) and experience the Texas Medical Center, supported by the GHA and HGA.
The exchange programme is embedded within the International Health Care optional module (Stage 3), which compares health and nursing between Scotland and a location of choice (in this case, Texas). The selection process, which takes place annually in January/February, involves a face to face interview with members of the GHA Board.

Our Research Aim
To engage with key partners to develop, deliver and disseminate high quality research that is of value to society, those using health and social care services, and the professions of nursing and midwifery.
Our Research Objectives:
- To build on existing research strengths by focusing work programmatically around three key thematic areas.
- To build research capability and capacity by proactively nurturing staff and student research development, and by considered appointments of new staff.
- To proactively collaborate with external partners and internal partners) to ensure research quality and relevance.
- To increase research income year on year in line with the targets in the School plan.
- To increase the quality and quantity of published research outputs in line with REF 2020 targets in order to ensure a substantive nursing and midwifery contribution.
- Within the context of our overarching scholarship model, to develop mechanisms to ensure our research informs our teaching and practice and, in turn, our learning activities inform our research.

The School has been instrumental in founding the new International Network for Electronic Theses and Dissertations in Nursing (INETDIN) which aims to be the key global site for knowledge about nursing e-theses and dissertations.
Our key strength lies in providing high quality teaching from a supportive team of qualified academics and practitioners, thereby enabling our students to benefit from their research and clinical knowledge in a variety of settings.
We have associated ourselves with various academic institutes, clinics and hospitals to ensure that our education is contemporary, evidence based and meets the needs of healthcare providers across the globe.
