Important Health Advice for Students

Registering with a Family Doctor/Medical Practice/ General Practitioner (GP)

  • If you are unwell during your time as a student, you may need to receive treatment from a local Family Doctor/General Practitioner (GP). New students will receive information about which GP practice to register with in the RGU Student Handbook and on the medical advice page of the New Students section of the University website.
  • If you are a returning student who has not already registered with a GP, you should refer to the information provided on the NHS Grampian website to locate the GP practice which is closest to your place of residence.

All students should make sure they register with a GP practice as soon as possible.

Meningitis C

  • If you are under 25 and entering university for the first time, you will have been advised to obtain a MenC vaccine from your current GP practice before starting your studies. If that has not been possible, you should arrange to get the vaccine from your GP in Aberdeen once you have registered with a GP practice.
  • An information leaflet explaining the need for vaccination can be accessed at Immunisation Scotland.

Ebola

  • As you are aware from the media, cases of Ebola have been confirmed in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. The University is maintaining close contact with NHS Grampian’s Health Protection Team and the current expert advice is that the risk of becoming infected with Ebola virus is considered to be low. This is unless individuals have had contact with animals/raw meat infected with the virus or have had contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected people.
  • Advice from the Health Protection Team is that anyone who has recently travelled from abroad and then becomes unwell with a fever (>38C) within 21 days of arrival in the UK should phone their GP Practice. They should inform the Practice of their recent travel history and they should also inform the University. The Health Protection Team has stated explicitly that no further precautions are necessary given the low level of the risk.
  • The situation with Ebola virus disease is being kept under review. The University is maintaining contact with the Health Protection Team who, in turn, are liaising at a national level with Health Protection Scotland and with the UK authorities. If their advice should change, we will review our arrangements and will keep all students informed.
