Recruitment Manager, Sky Creative

Shaun Stephen

After graduating in 2015, Shaun now manages the recruitment for Sky Creative.

Tell us about your current role.

I look after the recruitment for Sky Creative; Sky’s inhouse creative agency and the largest team in Europe. We develop award-winning TV and digital experiences as well as Advertising, Branding, Through the line, Motion and animation, it’s all here, and all created in-house.

What advice would you offer to an applicant who is considering a course at Gray’s or RGU?

Keep an open mind and do what you want to do. Though my parents are super supportive, Uni was never really considered an option on the cards however I ended up being the first person in my family to attend (after initially taking a gap year to save some money).

What advice would you offer to current students on your course?

There’s a huge number of jobs that you probably didn’t even know existed. Make a list of companies that you think you might like to work for and develop your folio in a way that showcases you and your work in places where you might like to live.

Did you undertake a placement during your course?

I took on a placement during 3rd year and did 2 x 6-month internships in Australia. They were great experiences because they led to freelance work and more importantly allowed me to establish connections – I’m still in touch with the senior designer from my first placement and that seems like years ago; you never know what and where these connections can lead to.

What was the best thing about studying at RGU?

Probably a cliché but the people – I’m still in touch with my peers and classmates (I actually bumped into someone in London at the weekend who was from the year above who studied on the Fashion & Textiles course). The people and staff from Gray’s had a way of making it all sorts of weird and wonderful. I love being a part of that.

What was the best thing about studying in Aberdeen?

There’s a bit of everything; The beach, the city, the campus being surrounded by gorgeous greenery and just outside of town.
