Department for the Enhancement
of Learning, Teaching and Assessment

Welcome to the new DELTA web pages launched in August 2011.

We hope you will find the Department's services and online resources helpful.

Our web resources are located within the University's CampusMoodle virtual learning environment, linked from this external-facing homepage. You will have to login to CampusMoodle, using your usual network user ID and password, to access DELTA content. If you have any difficulties, or would like assistance please contact the helpdesk.

Purpose & Focus

Our purpose is to promote and support enhancement of learning, teaching and assessment across the University.

Our focus is on student learning including:
  • all forms of delivery and engagement, on-campus and off-campus
  • e-learning and associated technologies

Our view of the concept of "enhancement" is:
  • making it better -any aspect of learning or the student experience
  • making the best use of opportunities and resources
 

Approach

Client-centred:
  • staff of the University who have responsibilities for teaching and supporting student learning
  • students who use the University's e-learning environment, and students who use our study support services

Aligned to:
  • the University Strategy A Clear Future
  • the organisation of the University, connecting with faculties and schools, other support service departments, committees and the Student Union

Inward- and outward-looking, we aim to help:
  • share effective practice within the University
  • staff and students engage with external ideas and resources

    Learning Spaces

    As a Dean, Alan Davidson is a member of the University's Strategy, Planning and Resources Group. This connects DELTA with the strategic planning and management of the University.

DELTA supports strategic and operational enhancement in the following areas:

    Our role is to promote and support the development of good practice in teaching, learning and assessment and to enhance the student experience.

Development opportunities and resources for staff:

  • who are are new to teaching in higher education
  • who want to refresh / update their capability in specific aspects of practice

eLearning

    eLearning

    Our role is to ensure that the University's e-Learning capability is fit-for-purpose and fit-for-the-future, by leading the operation and development of the University's e-Learning infrastructure and support services for staff

We are the central service for e-learning support:

Working in close partnership with staff in schools, and other central departments, in particular ITS, the Library, and Student Administration

We provide a joined-up service across four broad areas:

CampusMoodle

CampusMoodle is the University's Virtual Learning Environment. It is based on open-source software that is widely used in universities across the world. We believe that CampusMoodle now stands out as a leading implementation in both public and private sectors.

DELTA works in partnership with ITS to continually improve, develop and maintain the platform :

  • DELTA leads the strategic direction, operation and development of CampusMoodle, in terms of design, functionality, integrations and provides development support for staff
  • ITS provides hosting, systems, maintenance, developmental and project services

 

eLearning Infrastructure

We evaluate, procure and support a range of technologies that form the wider e-learning environment.

Providing carefully selected tools, solutions and services for staff and students, this includes:

  • Specialist software for authoring and developing materials
  • Specialist solutions and approaches e.g.Mahara (MyPortfolio), computer-aided assessment and Virtual Classroom integrations
  • Streaming media capability for upload, encoding, storage and delivery
  • Hardware and devices - provision, training and guidance on how to integrate into teaching and learning practice
  • Classroom based technologies e.g. Lecture Capture, Web conferencing, and SMART presentation hardware

 

Staff Support and Development

Provision of development support services for staff to:

  • Encourage and promote the effective and efficient use of e-Learning in blended and distance learning delivery
  • Promote development of online distance learning provision


We provide central support to academic, administration and support staff:

  • On an individual basis
  • For project groups and course teams
  • In partnership with School-based e-learning advisers and Learning Enhancement Coordinators
  • In conjunction with School and Faculty projects (in support of strategy)


We do this in the following ways:

  • Provision of online resources and guidance
  • Consultancy services and project support
  • Development of high quality, innovative content
  • Open Faculty/School drop-in sessions
  • Ad-hoc face-to-face / desk-visits
  • Training sessions and workshops (face-2-face and online)
  • Arranging external training provider sessions for School based groups and e-Learning and support staff

Educational Media Services

We have a state-of-the-art, professional capability to produce high-quality multimedia digital content for learning and teaching.

Our services include:

  • Media production - creation of content for staff, recording on-or off-campus
  • Consultancy and advice to help staff: (i) consider the opportunities and possibilities to use multimedia and digital content in their teaching and (ii) plan and design use of multimedia and digital content in their teaching
  • Training and advice in use of technologies and hardware to help staff produce their own digital content

Study Skills

  • Study Skills & Access

    Study Skills & Access Unit

    The Study Skills and Access Unit provides free, confidential face-to-face appointments and online support to students

The Unit can help students with:  

  • Writing, Study and Presentation Skills
  • Revision and Exam Techniques
  • Maths, Stats and Numeracy
  • English Language Support, for speakers of other languages
  • IT skills, including using Word, PowerPoint and Excel 

Articulation Service

The Unit also provides the base for a number of staff who support the work of the North East Articulation Hub, a partnership between Aberdeen College, Banff and Buchan College and the University.
