Processes and Practice in Social Care 30 credits at SCQF Level 7

1. Overview

This module provides the student with understanding of the core knowledge, skills and values which underpin professional activity. Students will explore how approaches to professional development impact on service provision.

A significant number of potential students don’t have the right level of entry qualifications to embark on a higher education degree course and this module is one of four distance learning modules which will allow applicants to top up their academic credits. The modules are independent of one another and applicants can select the module that best meets the gap in their learning.

This stand-alone module will be relevant to workers with gaps in knowledge in a particular area or those with a more general interest in developing their knowledge. This module addresses working with people in settings including; community work, social care, education, health and focuses on understanding people and how effective services can be provided.

2. What you will study

This stand-alone on-line distance learning module is credit rated for 30 credits at SCQF 7. This module includes a minimum of a workbook, relevant multi-media content and on line support from the module co-ordinator each week. The students have 8 weeks of teaching input and four weeks to develop their assignment.

3. How you will learn

Throughout the module the online materials and individual study will allow students to address the four learning outcomes:

  1. Understand and apply the process of assessment, risk and risk management.
  2. Understand the themes and practice approaches which inform social care practice.
  3. Consider the nature of social care practice and the underlying assumptions in relation to values and ethics.
  4. Understand the importance of reflection in developing the process of good practice.

4. Entry Requirements

Two passes at higher or above or SVQ111 or equivalent. Applicants should either be in employment or have recent relevant experience of working to support individuals.

7. Prospects

In order to apply for degree level courses applicants require 120 credits at level 7. Completion of this module will provide students with 30 credits and completion of all four modules 120 credits which makes students eligible for application to a range of degrees such as social work, social pedagogy, social science, nursing and community work.
