Grampian Community Law Centre walks for justice
RGU has hosted Aberdeen’s first ever legal walk in aid of the Access to Justice Foundation.
Legal walks are a powerful initiative designed to raise funds for organisations dedicated to bridging the access to justice gap.
Cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh already hold them annually to further this cause and Aberdeen has now followed in their footsteps by hosting one of its own thanks to The Law School’s student-led Grampian Community Law Centre.
Around 40 people from the legal community took part in the route and, so far, over £500 has been donated towards the Access to Justice Foundation, an organisation that aims to improve access to justice for the most vulnerable in society.
As well as raising money, the walk aimed to widen the accessibility of law to the University community and provided students with engaging, extra-curricular activity which promoted networking and inclusivity.
Calum Graham, Student Director for the Grampian Community Law Centre, organised the inaugural Legal Walk. He said: “It was great to be involved in Aberdeen’s inaugural legal walk this month in support of the Access to Justice Foundation. We had almost 40 people walking on the day from the local universities and the walk’s sponsor, Addleshaw Goddard, who all came together to raise money for such a worthy cause.
“The walkers all enjoyed the experience and the weather was better than expected which was a nice bonus! I very much look forward to seeing how the event grows and develops in future years.”
The legal walk itself started and ended at the Sir Ian Wood Building on the RGU campus and included a loop round Duthie Park following a stroll down the River Dee. After the walk, a reception, sponsored by Addleshaw Goddard, was held for participants to refresh and relax before heading home.
The activity enabled students and interested stakeholders to meet and network, growing
Rachel O’ Neill, Lecturer within The Law School, added: “A big thanks go out to all those that participated and have helped to raise money so far.
“Access to justice is a huge issue, particular in the current economic climate, and the money raised is going to a very worthwhile cause.”
Anyone who would still like to donate towards the Aberdeen Legal Walk can still do so:
