David Fraser with Ross Richardson and Grant Maxwell

KCA Deutag

Engineering student, David Fraser, has been awarded a scholarship from the UK's leading platform drilling contractor, KCA DEUTAG.

David will be awarded £2,500 in both his third and fourth years of study and will also have the opportunity to carry out two paid summer work placements with KCA DEUTAG. The third year mechanical engineering student will also be eligible to join the company's mentoring scheme.

Applicants were assessed on academic performance, interpersonal and leadership skills and enthusiasm and commitment for a career in the energy industry. Successful applicants were short-listed by RGU and invited to attend interviews at KCA DEUTAG, where the final selection process was made.

Ross Richardson, Director of HR, HSEQ and Training at KCA DEUTAG, said, "We are committed to supporting talented undergraduates like David who represent the next generation of engineers coming through university to join the oil and gas industry.

"We are very pleased to be working with RGU developing this scholarship scheme, which is part of KCA DEUTAG's ongoing programme of support for initiatives aimed at encouraging youngsters to study science and engineering."

Grant Maxwell, Associate Head of the School of Engineering, added, "We are delighted that KCA DEUTAG is offering this scholarship to our students. RGU puts great emphasis on producing graduates who are well prepared for employment and it is through collaboration with companies such as KCA DEUTAG that our students gain the practical experience that makes them highly sought after by employers."

Technip

Leading subsea engineering and construction contractor, Technip, has appointed its first undergraduate scholars. These appointments have been made following the development of a scholarship scheme in conjunction with RGU and launched at the beginning of 2007. The two scholars, Bruce Buchan and Adam Widdowson were selected based upon academic merit and personal characteristics.

Technip Scholars

The scholarship, which is on offer to Mechanical Engineering and Quantity Surveying undergraduates, will provide Bruce and Adam with financial assistance of £2,000 per year for the duration of their degree course. However, it will also afford them the opportunity to become closely linked with the company with a Technip mentor and other resources available to help them make connections between class work theory and the working environment.

Katrine Sharp, HR Director, Technip said, "We are extremely pleased to have appointed Bruce and Adam as our first scholars and are confident the benefits for both them and Technip will be numerous. It is essential we encourage young engineers, surveyors and others to take an interest in the subsea industry and the RGU scholarship is a great vehicle in helping us to do that. We are grateful to RGU for their assistance in the process and look forward to working with the scholars in the coming weeks and months."

Bruce added, "I am really pleased to have been selected as a Technip scholar. It will not only give me a financial boost to help with the cost of university life, but will also provide me with a fantastic learning and development opportunity, which should help me stand out when I am qualified and looking to start my career."
