Colin has a background in mental health nursing, general medical nursing, audit and research. In the past 10 years he has developed very extensive experience as a researcher on a large number of local and national nursing and health service research studies. This has involved use of a wide range of methods. He has considerable expertise in research design and project management. This has been honed within the context of large scale projects commissioned by the NBS, NES and the Scottish Executive Health Department. Working in close partnership with Dr Bernice JM West, Colin has played a key role in generating over £500 000 of research income for the School and the University.

In recent years he has been particularly involved in leading a programme of research into the World Health Organisation Europe Family Health Nurse role. This research has been the first in Europe to systematically study the concept and the enacted role. In May 2007, Colin completed a PhD entitled “An analysis of the development of family health nursing in Scotland through policy and practice 1998 – 2006”. This comprises a substantial and significant body of work, which is available by clicking the link below:

In June 2008 the international Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) and Adobe Systems awarded Colin the Innovative Learning through ETDs Award for his work in creating the thesis and evaluating its dissemination.

Colin is currently Principal Investigator evaluating the clinical impact of the NHS Education for Scotland Cleanliness Champions initiative (£90,000) and holder of the 2006 Lisbeth Hockey Community Nursing Research Fellowship taking forward “An analysis of community nurses’ support for self care with patients who have long term conditions” (£25,000).

Colin has published very widely on a diverse range of academic topics, generating over 70 items of public output relating to health services research. Particular research interests include: role development; evaluation research; practice development; service redesign and innovation; quality of life measures; stroke nursing; and the arts and health care, especially poetry. Colin has recently had a collection of his poems and prose published by The Joanna Briggs Institute. More details of “In wards, out wards: poems and stories from nursing and beyond” are available by clicking the link below:

Colin is currently Convenor of the School’s Ethics Review Panel and Convenor of the RCN Research Society Scotland's Executive Committee.
