University Campus Development Receives Approval
Thursday, 18 March, 2010
Robert Gordon University's masterplan for the development of its Garthdee campus has received detailed planning approval from Aberdeen City Council Planning Department today (18 March 2010).
The University's plans for 34,000m2 of new build development were submitted to Aberdeen City Council last year following approval of its Garthdee Framework Development Report and a number of positive public consultation events with local residents.
Mike Berry, Director of Estates said, "We're delighted that the next phase of construction has been approved. Detailed planning approval of the new teaching and learning building is a further positive step in the University's ongoing plans for the development of its Garthdee campus."
The developments will give the University a central point of arrival which will make the most of the wonderful riverside setting and enhance the existing high quality campus at Garthdee. The new buildings will be connected to the existing Faculty of Health and Social Care, which neighbours RGU: SPORT and Aberdeen Business School.
The new development will see all of the University's academic activities located at the Garthdee Campus within state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities including a new library as well as formal and informal learning spaces for students. It will also allow staff and students from different disciplines to benefit from working more closely together than has previously been possible with two separate locations.
The new facilities will complement the University's existing buildings at the east end of the campus in terms of their innovative design and style, while providing an outstanding educational environment for its students. The campus will retain its park-like ambience and provide a recreational setting for the benefit of staff, students and the local community.
The total estimated cost of the development is in the order of £170 million and the University is currently considering plans for undertaking the work in two phases, the first of which would involve relocating all city centre academic provision to Garthdee with a potential completion date of August 2012.
