Statement on masks

A spokesman for Robert Gordon University said: “The use of the masks in teaching was always intended to give our students experience of complex mental health situations that they may encounter in their professional working environment, and enable them to develop the appropriate skills when supporting such people.

“We use simulation because it is ethically appropriate and it was not intended to suggest that the masks are representative of all people with mental ill health problems.

“It was never our intention to cause distress but we still believe there is a role for the masks in teaching our students in an environment which is conducive to learning and doesn’t put people with mental health problems at risk.”
