Smart Systems from Dumb Data: Professorial lecture to address information solutions
Wednesday, 08 February, 2012The first in a new calendar of public lectures at Robert Gordon University (RGU), Aberdeen will begin with a professorial lecture by Susan Craw, Director of the Institute for Innovation, Design and Sustainability Research (IDEAS) on Thursday 23 February at 6.15pm.
Businesses routinely generate and store increasing amounts of data and text in their network systems and online. During her lecture, Professor Craw will discuss how these vast sources of information can be exploited to guide choices, make decisions and solve problems intelligently.
Her research investigates the use of case-based reasoning as a smart technology for capturing and reusing experiences efficiently, which can be applied in the oil and gas, health, pharmaceutical and space industries.
She explains: “Decision-making in business is often human based and therefore proves difficult to capture long-term as expertise is not always retained when employees leave an organisation. Databases and documents should be regarded as repositories of these experiences and used to suggest and support choices.”
These ideas will be explored in the lecture via systems developed for several applications including product design, project planning and music recommenders.
When awarded her Professorship in 1998, Susan was only the second female Computing Professor in Scotland. Since then, she has been Head of RGU’s School of Computing and Head of Research for the Faculty of Design & Technology, before being appointed Director of IDEAS in 2009.
Susan’s Artificial Intelligence research interests include case-based reasoning, text mining, knowledge discovery, and automated tools for knowledge acquisition, refinement and management. As well as being highly relevant to industry, her research has societal impact through healthcare and social media applications.
The lecture will begin at 6.15pm at RGU’s Faculty of Health and Social Care, Garthdee, and will be followed by an opportunity for questions. The evening will conclude with light refreshments.
