Wednesday, 21 April, 2010
Robert Gordon University student and RGU: SPORT scholar, Jane Turner, has won the British Universities and Colleges' women's stroke-play golf championship for the second year running.
A full Scotland international team player, Jane, who is a second year graphic design student, had rounds of 76, 74, 75 and 74 for a total of 299 over a demanding Dundonald Links women's course. Jane moved into the lead for the first time when she birdied the 17th hole with a pitch-and-a-putt in the final round.
Jane is now hoping to pull off a title double on the Ayrshire links, as next weekend she will play in the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Troon.
"The Ayrshire coast is great for me. I have improved every game this season and hope that this sets me up for what is to come this season," she said.
Jane is supported by the Aspire Golf Centre, Aberdeen through the RGU: SPORT scholarship scheme. As a RGU: SPORT scholar, she is able to combine her studies with competing at the top of her game. She benefits from a support package of tailor-made programmes devised to support her individual needs, sports discipline and academic course requirements. In addition, the financial support element allows her to take part in tournaments around the globe.
A member of Craigielaw Golf Club, Jane is now well and truly in the top-flight of the women's game. Ranked 7th in the Scottish Ladies Amateur Order of Merit Rankings, the last year saw her become British Universities Ladies Individual Champion. She was also a member of the 2009 Scottish Ladies Home Internationals Team and a semi-finalist at the Scottish Ladies Amateur Championship.
In early June Jane will be heading for Malaga, Spain, to take part in the FISU World University Championships.
