A group of student athletes from Robert Gordon University (RGU) are making final preparations to compete in a national championship held within the London 2012 Olympic Stadium.
Nine students will compete against their varsity rivals for glory in the British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Visa Outdoor Athletics Championships which run from Friday 4 to Monday 7 May. Part of the London Prepares series, the Championships will be the official London 2012 Athletics test event.
Over 1700 students sport stars hailing from 117 UK higher education institutions will compete across 40 track and field events over the course of the annual championships, which will be attended by over 58,000 spectators.
The nine RGU students will compete in 10 events including the 100m, 200m, 400m, 1500m, long jump, triple jump, the 5k and 10k.
First year children’s nursing student and RGU:SPORT scholar, Jennifer Cruickshanks (18), will compete in the 2k steeplechase. Commenting on the challenge ahead, the Lundin Links local commented:
“I'm really looking forwards to going to London and competing in the Olympic Stadium, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity and a huge honour to run on the same track where the world's best athletes will compete in the summer. I'm really looking forward to it! Training has been going well - I've been working hard so I'm hoping to get a personal best down in London, that's the aim!”
President of Sport and Physical Activity at RGU, Nicola Scott, will be flying down with the team this week to support their efforts. She added: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the students to showcase their abilities while also flying the flag for RGU.
“As a University we work hard to nurture sporting excellence through our academic programmes, training provision and on-campus facilities. We are proud to play a role in the sporting careers of the upcoming elite across a broad spectrum of disciplines and wish this group of budding athletes all the best for the championship.”
