Third year Pharmacy students are currently engaged in a coursework with a difference. They have been tasked with developing a YouTube health promotion video to promote awareness of prostate cancer and testicular self-examination.
Over 10 days the students are being split into groups of 10 to work on the project, with support available to them from staff at Aberdeen Business School, the Department for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching, as well as external parties, including designer and RGU graduate, Keir Booth. Keir’s bespoke designer t-shirt company, ParrotGhost, will be designing a t-shirt to promote awareness of Movember – a moustache growing charity event - for 2011.
Also Peterhead baking company, Fairytale Fancies, are planning to work with the students to design a cupcake aimed at raising awareness of prostate / testicular cancers.
Dr Lorna McHattie is the lecturer leading the project. She explains, “The students have been learning about how to design health promotion campaigns, and this YouTube exercise will help them understand exactly what to do and how difficult it can be to spread messages to the public.”
The winning team will be the one that has the most hits on their YouTube video over the course of a 3-week period. They will be awarded 10 tickets for the main stand of Pittodrie for the Hearts game in February, courtesy of Aberdeen Football Club.
