Nursing student overcomes family tragedies to graduate

Nikki Harrison from Drumlithie near Stonehaven, overcame a host of recent family tragedies to graduate with a BA Adult Nursing Degree on Friday 9 December at 10.30am.

Nikki HarrisonNikki (22) not only endured the tragic deaths of four family members but also overcame being admitted to hospital with acute tonsillitis whilst studying for her degree.

The family has gone through tough times in recent years, with Nikki losing two grandmothers and an uncle in 2005. The family was then dealt two further blows when, later in the same year, Nikki’s grandfather and father died within 10 days of each other. Tragically, her father, Neil (also known as Harry), was only 42 when he passed away.

Nikki has very much followed in the footsteps of her mum Linda.  Only last year Linda, who was in the audience on Nikki’s day of celebration, completed the same degree at Robert Gordon University.

All the hard work has paid off for Nikki and with graduation now over, she will return to north London where she has taken up a post in intensive care nursing at Watford General Hospital.

Nikki said: “The last few years have proved to be extremely difficult but I’m proud to have been able to keep my studies going. I’m really enjoying my new job which has made all the hard work worth it.”
