Kaimhill Primary School Eco Club visit new RGU site
Wednesday, 01 February, 2012Pupils from Kaimhill Primary School's Eco Club visited (Wednesday 1 February) Robert Gordon University's (RGU) new 34,000m2 build development at Garthdee, Aberdeen to choose positions for new bird boxes and feeders which they created.
The pupils met with representatives from Miller Construction to hand over bird boxes they have painted and a squirrel feeder obstacle course which has been created specifically for the new site, currently under construction and due to be completed on time in Spring 2013. The new items will accompany posters already displayed on site, drawn by older pupils from the primary school, relating to safety.
Lisa Williams, Depute Head of Kaimhill Primary School, said; "The primary schools Eco Club prides itself on teaching the children about environmental issues and they love getting hands on experience. It's fantastic that RGU and Miller have helped raise awareness of the effects construction has on local wildlife and also involved the pupils in bettering natural habitats with the addition of their animal feeders and houses."
The excursion follows on from several sessions that Miller Construction spent with the pupils, where they talked about various elements relating to RGU's new building, including the progress of the new site, its surrounding wildlife and an informative session on safety.
Richard Gallacher, Area Director – Scotland, Miller Construction, said: "We were delighted to welcome pupils from Kaimhill Primary School to the site. During their visit we gave them a tour of the site, advising them of the most suitable places to put the bird boxes. The pupils were very engaged and enjoyed the tour, which enabled them to see for themselves, the best positions on site for the bird boxes and squirrel feeder obstacle, they have worked hard to create.
"We take our environmental credentials seriously at Miller and where possible, look to involve and engage the communities in which we are working."
