Great 2012 start for Aurélie
Wednesday, 01 February, 2012MSc Corporate Communications and Public Affairs student and RGU sport scholar, Aurélie Bernadet (21), has kicked off the new year with a bang, taking top spots in both local and national table tennis tournaments in January alone.
Aurélie’s 2012 campaign began on Sunday 22 January when she competed in the ADTTA North of Scotland Confined Table Tennis Championships at Aberdeen Sports Village. The ADDTA is an annual tournament which restricts entry to the top eight ranked players who are resident or born in the region.
On the day, Aurélie fought through the initial heats and semi-final to win the Ladies Singles and come runner up in the Open Single against her male contestants. The event was ultimately won by Sebastian Wolejnio who beat Aurélie in a closely contested five set final.
Next on the competition schedule was the West of Scotland Open in Glasgow on Saturday 28 January. Held in Scotstoun Leisure Centre, the tournament attracted a high quality entry including top ranked national players.
Aurélie won the Ladies doubles alongside Lithuania’s Viktorija Kravcenko – a fellow player who is currently studying in Aberdeen. She then went on to beat Viktorija and fellow RGU student Roxanna Milnes in the Ladies Single before losing in the final against Welsh Olympic hopeful and UK rank number three, Naomi Owen.
Commenting on her progress in 2012 so far, Aurélie said: “It has been a wonderful experience so far. I have beaten some of the top ranked players in Scotland. However, I know that I still have a long way to go and I thank RGU sport for their support so far.”
Aurélie, who hails from Saint Benoit, France, will next compete on Saturday 4 February at the Scottish University Sports Table Tennis tournament at Aberdeen Sport Village; the National League Division Two tournament in Edinburgh on Saturday 11 February; and the British Universities & Colleges Sports championship on 18-19 February in Nottingham.
**UPDATE** Aurélie won the Ladies Singles at the Scottish University Table Tennis Championship on 4th February. She beat fellow RGU student Roxanna Milne 3/1, before winning 3/0 against the University of Edinburgh’s Rita Prajapati in the semi-final, and the University of Aberdeen’s Viktorija Kravcenko 3/0 in the final.
In the open doubles, Aurélie played with Roxanna and placed 3rd, losing against two male contestants from the University of St Andrews.
