Fraserburgh artist reflects the spectrum

Friday, 03 September, 2010

Louise HewittLouise Hewitt (67) from Fraserburgh, will exhibit her end-of-year art work at the launch of Robert Gordon University's Gray's School of Art Masters Degree Show on 3 September 2010.

Previously an art teacher at Peterhead Academy, Louise has explored the material of light for her end-of-year project, focusing on the spectrum of colours projected through prisms. The artist has created a series of oil paintings which reflect the colours of light when separated by a prism.

Louise explains, "As a result of my career as an art teacher, I would always paint what was physically in front on me. However, after witnessing the spectra created by a lens exhibit at the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses in Fraserburgh, I decided that my topic for research would be the material of light, the main ingredient for the visual artist."

"I therefore based my work on various aspects of light including sun notches and the spectrum which I could see when looking through a prism. My paintings reflect the intrinsic patterns and moods created by the colours of light and ignore physical objects visible in our day-to-day life."

The inspiration for Louise's work stems from three distinct buildings in
Fraserburgh: the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses; Dalrymple Hall and Arts Centre, and Fraserburgh West Church, where she observed the display of colours projected through the windows in the various locations.

Louise, who is due to graduate from Gray's in December with a Masters in Fine Art, is keen to pursue research on colour moods, focusing on the different interpretations of colours created by light.

Commenting on her time at Gray's, Louise said, "I have had a brilliant experience at University and have really enjoyed mixing with other artists during my course. I feel I will leave Gray's with a better understanding of the contemporary art scene."

After its launch on Friday 3 September, the Masters Degree Show will be open to the public at Gray's School of Art, Garthdee Road, Aberdeen until Saturday 11 September from 10am-8pm Monday to Friday and 10am-5pm on Saturdays. For more information, please visit www.rgu.ac.uk/mastersdegreeshow.
