Dubai-based professional returns to Aberdeen to receive MBA

Martin Bremner 2Martin Bremner will return to the North-east this month to graduate with an Oil & Gas Masters in Business Administration (MBA).

Originally from Ellon, and a former pupil of Mintlaw Academy, Martin (38) will return from Dubai with his family to attend the graduation ceremony at Aberdeen Music Hall at 10.30am on Thursday 9 December.

Currently working as an Operations Director for Maxtube, Martin undertook the University’s Oil and Gas MBA programme in a distance learning format, allowing him to combine work and family life abroad with his studies.

He began the course three years ago, having chosen to once again study at Robert Gordon University, where he had undertaken a Management studies certificate in the 1990s.

However, the AMBA (Association of MBAs) accredited courses’ unique focus on the oil and gas sector in which he works proved to be the deciding factor.

As with the University’s other distance learning programmes, Martin’s degree was delivered through Campus Moodle - a virtual learning environment. He also had regular opportunities to interact with tutors and fellow students from around the world throughout his studies.

Martin comments: “The main challenge I found was dedicating the time necessary to study when trying to balance other commitments.  I also found that initially getting back into the process of studying difficult.”

“As such, I would say that when considering a distance learning MBA the individual needs to fully appreciate the magnitude of the task and ensure their family is on board.  It is hard work and very stressful at times but I believe worth the effort.

“I feel that the course has enabled me to bring a more structured approach to my work and has added value to my role within the company.

“Particular highlights”, he concluded, “have been gaining a more structured appreciation of the business environment and the various critical elements related to the subject, and also the leadership week which was a very useful networking opportunity with fellow students.”

Martin will be joined by his family at Thursday morning’s ceremony, namely wife Pamela, son Mason (14), daughter Teagan (8) and mother Catherine. They will stay on in Ellon for Christmas before flying back to Dubai for New Year.
