Curling scholar secures ice cool win at Scottish Championships

Rhiann Macleod 2Social Work student and RGU: SPORT scholar, Rhiann Macleod, took first place alongside her teammates in the final of the Junior Scottish Curling Championships at the weekend.

Rhiann (20), who hails from Blair Atholl, Perthshire, stormed to a 10-4 victory at the Championships which were held at Curl Aberdeen on the afternoon of Sunday 16 January.

The third year Social Work student - accompanied by teammates Eve Muirhead (team captain and three time World Junior Champion), Anna Sloan and Vicki Adams - will now go on to represent Scotland at the World Junior Championships in March.

A former student of Pitlochry Academy and (latterly) Breadalbane Academy, Rhiann has curled since she was 12 years old.  Despite her young years she has already competed in the Oslo Women’s Cup, the Scottish Junior Championships, the Scottish Women’s Championships and European Junior Tours.

“I’ve had two major goals in mind for 2011,” stated Rhiann, “the first being to win the Scottish Junior Championships. With this now secured, all my energy and focus is on March’s World Championships.  As a team we are incredibly motivated to take top place for our country.”

Rhiann’s sporting career is supported by the RGU: SPORT Scholar programme where she benefits from a package of tailor-made programmes devised to support her needs, sports discipline and academic course requirements. Like her fellow scholars at the University who compete across a broad portfolio of sports including swimming, football, rugby, gymnastics and skiing, Rhiann also receives financial support to help cover equipment, travel and accommodation costs as well as competition entry fees.

The Junior Women’s Scottish team will be joined at the World Championships, which will take place between 5 – 13 March in Perth, by the Junior Men’s team which will be led by Aberdeen’s John Penny.
