‘Conversations’ at Scott Sutherland

Pascal Flammer Scott Sutherland School 'Conversations'Robert Gordon University's final year architecture students are benefiting from the insight of up and coming international practitioners this week, ahead of ‘The Big Crit' in May.

Held annually at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment to showcase the work of students selected for their excellence, ‘The Big Crit' provides the students with their final opportunity to set themselves apart from their peers ahead of graduation.

This interim event, entitled ‘Conversations', which is also held annually, is giving them a chance to gain feedback on the projects they are working on whilst they are still in the formative stages. After a series of presentations delivered by the students, Pascal Flammer who runs his own practice in Switzerland and London-based James Payne, both recognised as leading lights in their field, are critiquing the work and trying to provide the students with some direction.

Samuel Penn, a lecturer and organiser of the event, explained: "This is a fringe event to the end of session ‘Big Crit' and gives the students the chance to discuss their ideas with both professionals and academics. There is a focus on being able to formulate elegant intellectual concepts and communicate those in a flexible and mature manner. We have been very lucky to be able to welcome Pascal and James to the school and look forward to seeing them make a significant impact within the profession."

The forum has covered a variety of themes so far, including the influences that impact on an architect's ability to create something original and how they can learn to trust their gut instinct. During the first session of the week, Pascal Flammer explained: "We architects should not just be creatures that nobody understands. Our ability to communicate as professionals is very important."

‘The Big Crit' will be open to the public to attend in May, with further details to follow. For more information about both of the special guests at the University this week, visit http://www.pascalflammer.com/ and http://www.archipelago-architects.co.uk/
