Colour matters at Gray’s School of Art
Monday, 15 March, 2010
Leading figures from the world of fashion and design, and the cream of Scotland's student design talent will converge on Robert Gordon University's Gray's School of Art tomorrow (Tuesday 16 March) as part of a Day of Colour, organised by The Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC).
The winner of the Scottish leg of SDC's International Student Design Competition will be announced at the event, which will also include presentations from two cutting-edge practitioners.
Ros Studd, who has over 20 years of experience of working in the fashion and textile industry for companies including Next and Habitat, will be talking about why colour is so important and the impact that good colour choice can have on a company's sales and profits.
Owner of Dare Hairdressers in Aberdeen, John Cooper, has been at the forefront of his field for many years, and has seen his work published in leading hair magazine, Journals, as well as running workshops for the likes of Wella and Schwarzkopf International. He will be presenting on his experiences of working on fashion photo shoots and explaining how important colour is to his area of expertise.
As part of the Student Design Competition, three students from each university attending the event have been selected to present their ideas. Those shortlisted have been charged with demonstrating their creative, imaginative and original use of colour in fashion or textiles. They will be presenting their design projects, incorporating drawings, mood boards, photographs and material swatches, to the judging panel, and the winner will go forward to the UK in Nottingham in May.
Chris Sargeant, who looks after fashion and design for SDC's Board of Trustees, said, "As an educational charity dedicated to promoting the knowledge of colour, we are pleased to be the catalyst for events such as this. They encourage new design talent and help better prepare students for their future careers in the fashion industry."
