Celebrating 50 years of Library and Information Science at RGU

The Information Management subject group at Robert Gordon University is to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a Friends and Alumni Reception on Wednesday, June 28 at Aberdeen Business School. All former staff and students are invited to attend the event which marks half a century of librarianship and information science education.

SIWB Library TpwerThe group, which holds iSchool status, making it part of an elite group of world information schools, has been a leader in teaching and research in librarianship and information science over the last 50 years. The courses are consistently highly ranked and are currently 2nd in the UK and top in Scotland for the subject area according to The Complete University Guide 2017.

This success has been possible by maintaining a strong vocational focus combined with world-leading academic research and working in close partnership with professional bodies such as CILIP.

Subject leader Dr Elizabeth Tait said: “The Information Management group have been pioneers of teaching and research in the sector. We were the first UK institution to offer an online distance learning course in Information and Library Studies and the first Professional Doctorate in Information Science (DInfSc). We continue to lead developments and innovation, most recently launching a successful Graduate Certificate in Petroleum Data Management.

The reception will coincide with the 6th Biennial i3 conference which continues to attract leading International scholars in Information Science.

Conference Director Professor Peter Reid said: “We are so proud of our alumnus, many of whom have gone on to become leading practitioners in the public and private sectors. We are delighted to welcome our friends and alumni to celebrate our success over the last 50 years and look forward to the future.”

The event, which begins at 6.30pm, will include guest speakers and an exhibition to showcase the work of the Information Management group throughout the years.  Organisers say they would love to hear from alumni and former staff. Anyone who is interested in attending should email imopen@rgu.ac.uk or get in touch via the alumni Facebook group RGU Information and Library Studies Past and Present.
