Big day for mature student who has big ideas on textiles
Friday, 09 July, 2010
Agnes Keilloh (55), a mother-of-two from Cove in Aberdeen, who made a big statement at Gray's Degree Show 2010 with her life-sized ‘belly bags', is to graduate with a degree in Textiles and Surface Design more than 40 years after she left school without any Highers.
Agnes, whose most recent collection of work is a direct response to Western society's ongoing obesity issues, embarked on a degree at Robert Gordon University after completing an HNC at Aberdeen College. This was only possible after she built up her confidence through attending evening classes at Harlaw Academy and she was absolutely delighted to make it to Gray's.
She explained: "I was thrilled to be accepted to study at Gray's School of Art. When I left school at 15 art school wasn't an option and I went to work in the commercial printing industry with Waverly Press, which was based just off George Street. When my daughters left home I decided to take up art again and it wasn't long before I was hooked. I have found the art school environment very rewarding and enjoyable, so much so that I plan to go into further education and work as a tutor eventually."
Having spent many years as a stay-at-home-mum, Agnes knows first hand how this can impact on your confidence but would like to inspire others to achieve their dreams. She said: "I really want to show that it is possible to move forward with your life, even at a later stage. It has been hard work and demanding but my tutors have been a big support and eight years on I'm so looking forward to being a graduate. Long term aspirations are achievable. I'm testimony to that."
