Art meets business for commerce-savvy students

Monday, 26 April, 2010

Karolina Czarneck and Derek ShawStudents from Aberdeen Business School and Gray's School of Art at Robert Gordon University are proving just how successful cross-disciplinary projects can be after launching a fashion photography exhibition on campus.

Commercial Photography students joined forces with their Fashion Management counterparts at various stages during the last academic year to produce fashion photography images and decided that these were far too eye-catching to go un-noticed.

Course leader in Fashion Management, Karen Cross, explained: "The photography students provided technical expertise and artistic flair, while the fashion management students assisted with garment sourcing, styling and even modelling! We borrowed garments from a number of stores in and around Aberdeen and the shoots took place at a variety of local locations. The result provides a really nice snap shot of Aberdeen at the moment, as well as demonstrating the talent of our local students."

The project was completed as part of a module for the Fashion Management students and has also provided material for the photographers' portfolios. Mick Eason, who looks after the Commercial Photography course at Gray's which was launched last year explained: "It is hoped that this kind of collaboration will continue to grow, underpinning students' readiness to hit the ground running when they enter the world of work. A major focus of our new course is to stimulate students' business awareness as well as furthering their artistic practice."

The exhibition will continue until later in May and is open to the public during normal opening hours in the Main Atrium of Aberdeen Business School, Garthdee Road.
