Architecture provides building block of career in fashion for Gray’s student

An ambitious young fashion designer from Markinch in Fife has taken inspiration from contemporary architecture for her final year project which is on display now in Aberdeen.

Sarah MurphySarah Murphy (22) who is studying Fashion and Textiles at Gray’s School of Art, has unveiled the culmination of four years’ hard work at the annual Degree Show, which runs until Saturday, June 24.

She is showcasing her ‘Seduire’ collection which combines contemporary buildings and lingerie from the past.

Sarah said: “I loved art at school and studied fashion in Advance Higher Art therefore wanted to pursue it further and I chose to come to Gray’s because they offered this course which combined Fashion and Textiles together so I could get a broad range of skills in the field.

“I am currently looking at contemporary architecture and pairing it with historical foundation garments to create a prestigious womenswear collection. The flowing lines, strong linear elements and curving staircases involved in architecture have all provided inspiration for my work.”

Sarah has thoroughly enjoyed her time at Gray’s, with one of the highlights being the chance to move to Hong Kong to study as part of her third year.

“The course has been very good and enjoyable throughout, albeit a bit challenging. The course is very intense particularly in 4th year where weekends play a vital part in ensuring you keep on top of work load.

“Being able to go on placement in 3rd year and move to Hong Kong for three months to gain experience within the fashion and textile industry has definitely been among the highlights of my time here.”

She is now looking forward to the next challenge after graduation, she added: “My plan after graduation is to move home to Fife and continue my studies at Edinburgh University on the Postgraduate Diploma in Education programme for Art and Design.”

The Gray’s School of Art Degree Show, which is sponsored by BP for the fourteenth year, runs from June 17 to 24 and will showcase work by students of all disciplines.
