A talented Aberdeen painting student whose fascinating work focuses around memories and life experiences will have her work on display in Aberdeen this week.
Joanne Laverton (26) who is studying Painting at Robert Gordon University’s (RGU) Gray’s School of Art, has unveiled the culmination of four years’ hard work at the annual Degree Show, which runs until Saturday, June 24.
Joanne, who hails from Northfield, had been interested in painting from a young age and made the decision to study at her local art school to develop her creative skills and increase employability.
“I have always been interested in painting, so the fine arts degree was everything I was looking for,” she said.
“My work plays with the idea of memory - through life experiences, stories told and memories reconstructed I create a foundation that allows me to expand my ideas and develop new narratives.
“Édouard Vuillard has been a big inspiration to me with his command of patterns and interiors. This has encouraged me to use more patterns within my practice, which helps bring prominence to the strong, vibrant shapes that are commonplace in my work.”
Joanne has thoroughly enjoyed her experience at university and is now looking ahead to the future and developing her artistic skills.
“I really enjoyed the course - tutors are great and very helpful, the opportunity to meet new people and study in the great facilities have helped me develop my work through the years
“I have also been able to build lasting relationships while developing my abilities and have really enjoyed the experience in hanging and presenting work.
“Eventually, and I’m sure all artists at my stage feel the same, I would love to gain recognition for my work and be in a position to showcase and sell my work regularly. In the meantime I am aiming to get myself a job in the creative sector while I push towards this.”
The Gray’s School of Art Degree Show, which is sponsored by BP for the fourteenth year, runs from June 17 to 24 and will showcase work by students of all disciplines.
