Students from Robert Gordon University’s (RGU) Law School recently came together for a week of intensive mediation training.
Aberdeen Business School hosted a five day mediation workshop which is the culmination of a year of online learning for students studying Alternative Dispute Resolution at the RGU Law School.
Mediation is the most comprehensive, flexible and useful tool in conflict management. This unpretentious, ancient process has been reinvented in recent years and is steadily gaining popularity in the UK and almost every other country of the world.
After studying in detail the theory and principles of conflict resolution, as well as advanced aspects of mediation in various contexts, the aspiring mediators came together for a week of intensive training and exercise at RGU.
As a part of Mediation Week events, Ken Macdonald, Aberdeen-based partner in the business disputes and asset recovery division of Brodies LLP, delivered a public guest lecture on practical aspects of commercial mediation followed by an informative and lively discussion.
The week-long workshop has been led by a number of prominent Scottish solicitors and mediation practitioners over the years who provide guidance and advice to the participants, often commending the students’ performance in practical sessions.
Dr Andrey Kotelnikov, a lecturer in the Law School who organised the workshop, said: “The intensive Mediation Week in Aberdeen Business School was a very successful event this year. I would like to thank all the practitioners who found the time in their busy schedules to share their experience with students.
“The course team is also very grateful to all the undergraduate and postgraduate students who assisted with the role plays during the seminar, and helped us test and refine the mediators’ skills in most genuine and challenging ways.”
Students who have completed the workshops and the related modules are awarded a Certificate in Mediation, and can also count it toward a Masters degree.
The Law School offers a variety of degrees capable of fostering a career within legal profession as well as boosting the professional competences for professionals working in other areas, such as education, HR, Oil & Gas, etc.
